There is much research done on the key characteristics and actions of leaders and in this article, we consider these against the network marketing industry and how to project these to build on your attraction marketing.

In so doing, we offer some valuable actions that consultants can start to emulate and adopt to develop their own leadership in attracting people into their network marketing business. This a core part of the success coaching I do with my team.

In seeking to develop your leadership for network marketing success, if you had to say what the most common characteristics of successful leaders are, what would be on your list?

It’s interesting that in leadership surveys, people place honesty at the top of the list. People value the truth, they value integrity, especially if based on other people’s personal experiences in choosing who to follow.

Today the climate of scepticism and mistrust around network marketing and MLM is as real as it was 10, 20, 30 years ago, particularly with the internet. It is still very important as a leader to be transparent and accessible, which is why events, video, webinars and just as importantly the telephone are the tools of choice for network marketing leadership.

That people need to learn to know you, like you and trust you, is an important lesson for your marketing – attraction marketing – and for leadership for network marketing success.

Success is rarely instant or easy. It is a journey that requires passion, persistence and consistence. There are many myths about instant success online. It’s important to enjoy the ride, see a bit of risk, and learning from failure as a crucial part of a the success process.

Far too many novice marketers focus too heavily on finding great tools, when actually what is needed is greater self-development, particularly around mindset, people skills and relationship building.

So let’s dispel some common myths about how to succeed online.

The first myth is around internet marketing systems.

You can’t build to succeed in an online business on the basis of one ‘killer’ system.

A while I wrote an article, titled “5 Reasons Why a Lead Generation System is Not a True Solution to Internet Business Success”, in which I dispel many of the myths about so-called ‘systems’ that promise you will ‘get-rich-quick’ if you just buy a piece of software.

Such tools might work for some people who have the other 95% you need already set up. For most of us, get real!

The second myth is about instant success with personal contact marketing.

I mean hosting meetings, business to business networking, phoning leads lists. These strategies will help you succeed in an online business by pumping your ‘list’ full of  prospects to speak to and some will be warmer towards you than others depending on the source. (Even your friends can be pretty cold if you start pitching them your latest business opportunity or ‘amazing’ products!)

However, developing the skills for great conversations takes time. Few of us are born with great communication and networking skills. We put ourselves out there, practice a lot, fall over a lot, until we achieve any kind of mastery. So don’t expect to have instant success in person either. Practice is perfect, as they say.

Ask lots of open questions when you follow up with a lead. Listen more than talk, listen to understand not to respond, have some fun finding common ground, building rapport around the person’s answers about their occupation, family life, recreational interests and motivation for a home business.

You’ll be amazed how this helps build trust. This is so very important to succeed in an online business, because there is so much hype and dishonesty on the internet. People buy YOU – they connect with you, not what you do. So remember, you are following up with real people, not credit cards – always!

Be asking yourself, how can I best assist this person in taking the next step to achieving their dreams and goals.

You see, there are no magic bullets – questions are the answer (great book by Allan Pease) and start with why (another fantastic book by Simon Sinek).

So … quick plan:

1# dig deep into YOUR why

2# master your trade (knowledge, skills, leadership)

3# be interested enough to ask pain/pleasure questions

4# listen for understanding.

Only in these ways can we give value to and assist other people.
